Welcome to Courageous Leadership with Travis Yates, where leaders find the insights, advice, and encouragement they need to lead courageously.

00:00:12.320 --> 00:00:13.599
Welcome back to the show.

00:00:13.599 --> 00:00:18.480
I'm so honored you decided to spend a few minutes with us here today.

00:00:18.480 --> 00:00:23.600
And we are filming this on the eve of Thanksgiving.

00:00:23.600 --> 00:00:31.519
And I wanted to give you a few thoughts about Thanksgiving and specifically a few thoughts about gratitude.

00:00:31.519 --> 00:00:42.079
Law enforcement and leadership specifically, I think we often get caught up in a cycle where gratitude is sort of left off that list, right?

00:00:42.079 --> 00:00:47.679
We enjoy complaining and griping and talking about the things that are negative in life.

00:00:47.679 --> 00:00:52.640
But I think on this Thanksgiving, what comes to mind is the power of gratitude.

00:00:52.640 --> 00:00:56.159
I don't have to regurgitate what the studies say.

00:00:56.159 --> 00:01:08.159
There's study after study after study that talk about how displaying gratitude will help you mentally, will help you physically, uh, will help every aspect of your life.

00:01:08.159 --> 00:01:33.280
And while there are plenty of things that I could talk about on how to display gratitude, whether that's writing your gratitude down once a day or before you go to bed, thinking about the three things that you're grateful for, I think what I wanted to focus in on is how unbelievable and unique it is to be where you are today, regardless of your circumstances.

00:01:33.280 --> 00:01:37.120
I want you to think about this term of what if.

00:01:37.120 --> 00:01:48.159
And what if we stopped in the hustle and bustle and we just realized that life is not happening to you, it's happening for you.

00:01:48.159 --> 00:01:54.640
What if we realized, regardless of the position you're in, that this moment in time is for you?

00:01:54.640 --> 00:02:00.079
And we can begin with the fact that you are listening to this today.

00:02:00.079 --> 00:02:07.040
The fact that you're all here today is a gift that God's given you that simply cannot be measured.

00:02:07.040 --> 00:02:09.439
I mean, you've already beat the odds.

00:02:09.439 --> 00:02:14.719
There are 195 countries and over 8 billion people in the world.

00:02:14.719 --> 00:02:17.280
You could have been born anywhere.

00:02:17.280 --> 00:02:23.840
And if you're in the United States, listen to this, you've got to understand that you had nothing to do with that.

00:02:23.840 --> 00:02:37.360
The gratefulness of being in this country, and despite what people may say, trust me, it's the greatest place to be, and it's the greatest profession to be in law enforcement, not in some other country, but here in the United States.

00:02:37.360 --> 00:02:38.879
You could have been born anywhere.

00:02:38.879 --> 00:02:46.719
In fact, in 40 of the countries, the average salary is $1,000 a year.

00:02:46.719 --> 00:02:47.919
You beat the odds.

00:02:47.919 --> 00:02:51.280
What do you think about that when you want to complain about salary, right?

00:02:51.280 --> 00:02:57.039
In 80 other countries, the annual salary is below $10,000.

00:02:57.039 --> 00:02:59.680
You beat those odds as well.

00:02:59.680 --> 00:03:07.919
45% of the world's population today doesn't have basic sanitation facilities, including modern plumbing.

00:03:07.919 --> 00:03:11.439
And if you're listening to me in Alabama, that doesn't even include you.

00:03:11.439 --> 00:03:13.039
You have modern plumbing.

00:03:13.039 --> 00:03:14.479
I've been there, it's beautiful.

00:03:14.479 --> 00:03:18.719
10% of the population suffers from chronic hunger and malnutrition.

00:03:18.719 --> 00:03:25.759
25% of the population lacks access to safe drinking water.

00:03:25.759 --> 00:03:40.639
You beat those odds.

00:03:40.639 --> 00:03:47.919
Did you know that as many as one-third of all marriages across the world are arranged marriages?

00:03:47.919 --> 00:03:52.000
Maybe law enforcement could benefit from that, but I'm just joking.

00:03:52.000 --> 00:03:53.199
Think about that.

00:03:53.199 --> 00:03:58.400
You get the power of choice when it comes to one of the most important decisions of your life.

00:03:58.400 --> 00:04:00.080
You beat those odds.

00:04:00.080 --> 00:04:06.879
Over 40 million people in the world live in some form of slavery.

00:04:06.879 --> 00:04:08.879
This isn't on your worry list.

00:04:08.879 --> 00:04:12.800
How about your thoughts and opinions?

00:04:12.800 --> 00:04:18.879
Just three countries on the planet have a strong practice and law supporting freedom of speech.

00:04:18.879 --> 00:04:20.800
Sweden and Australia.

00:04:20.800 --> 00:04:26.480
But none of those are as strong as where you set today, more than likely, the United States of America.

00:04:26.480 --> 00:04:29.040
I'm not trying to diminish the problems that you have.

00:04:29.040 --> 00:04:30.240
We all have them.

00:04:30.240 --> 00:04:32.639
It's part of this thing we call life.

00:04:32.639 --> 00:04:37.920
But I want you to understand when you talk about courage, you talk about leadership.

00:04:37.920 --> 00:04:40.399
You have such a head start today.

00:04:40.399 --> 00:04:47.360
You've been blessed beyond comprehension, and your foundation is nothing that you did.

00:04:47.360 --> 00:04:49.279
You didn't control any of it.

00:04:49.279 --> 00:04:55.839
You just so happen to be living where you're living, working where you're working, around the people you're around.

00:04:55.839 --> 00:05:07.680
I've been to several countries around the world training and consulting.

00:05:07.680 --> 00:05:10.879
And I've been to the Philippines twice.

00:05:10.879 --> 00:05:16.720
And I've trained their officers and consulted with their command staff there.

00:05:16.720 --> 00:05:18.319
It's a national police force.

00:05:18.319 --> 00:05:22.800
And the last time I was there, those officers were making about a hundred dollars a month.

00:05:22.800 --> 00:05:27.839
In fact, homelessness was a real problem within the agency.

00:05:27.839 --> 00:05:33.279
Such a problem they were actually building dormitories for their employees to live on.

00:05:33.279 --> 00:05:38.000
Why was I training them and why were they working in those conditions?

00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:39.439
And why wasn't I?

00:05:39.439 --> 00:05:41.279
Simply by the grace of God.

00:05:41.279 --> 00:05:42.639
I had nothing to do with it.

00:05:42.639 --> 00:05:47.759
I could have just as well been born there and living there and working in those conditions, but I wasn't.

00:05:47.759 --> 00:05:48.720
Right.

00:05:48.720 --> 00:05:56.240
So I think as we think about Thanksgiving, we often miss so much.

00:05:56.240 --> 00:05:59.360
We all get caught up in the food and the things going on.

00:05:59.360 --> 00:06:09.519
Maybe you're working, and you know, and we we complain about this and we complain about that, and all you got to do is go to your social media and see all the complaints, and you get suckered into it, right?

00:06:09.519 --> 00:06:28.399
But I think what I'd like you to remember on behalf of myself and this courageous leadership movement is how fortunate we are to be able to speak, to be able to engage, to be able to meet each other, to be able to speak freely, to be able to be comfortable compared to so many other places in the world.

00:06:28.399 --> 00:06:33.439
And if we did that, I think leadership becomes a lot easier.

00:06:33.439 --> 00:06:36.639
I think the problems we deal with becomes a lot easier.

00:06:36.639 --> 00:06:40.800
And I believe it could be the beginning of a change that we all need.

00:06:40.800 --> 00:06:42.879
It's definitely a reminder for me.

00:06:42.879 --> 00:06:45.120
Hopefully, it's a reminder for you.

00:06:45.120 --> 00:06:50.720
And on this Thanksgiving weekend, from me to you, thank you for what you do.

00:06:50.720 --> 00:06:54.160
And God bless each and every one of you.

00:06:55.759 --> 00:06:59.360
Thank you for listening to Courageous Leadership with Travis Yates.

00:06:59.360 --> 00:07:04.399
We invite you to join other courageous leaders at TravisYates.org.
